Ok I've asked before, but does ANYONE know of any monologues featuring mentally ill characters? (pref. females)
Like Brittany Murphy off "Don't say a word" or "Tib" from "The Rabbit". I looked for monologues from "Don't say a word" but there was nothing. help!

Hi Ellie -

Are we assuming you're auditioning for Cosi? If not, then there's a good one from that.

The current definitions of mental illness are so wide and varied that any character encountering a major conflict or who has had a traumatic experience could potentially fall into that category. So just for starters theres:

- Desiree from 'The Kid' by Michael Gow (a fairly uptight door-to-door religious sales person with a sad family history)
- Any of the girls speeches from 'The Boys' by Gordon Graham (each is the girlfriend or the mother of brothers who commit an horrific gang rape and murder)
- In a similar vein, any of the girls speeches from 'Blackrock' or 'Property of the Clan' by Nick Enright
- Sylvie from 'Sisters' by Stephen Sewell (a fairly transient woman who had to have an abortion, decided to get back in touch with her family and virtually has a nervous breakdown on stage)
- Katherine from 'The Secret Rapture' by David Hare (a woman with a severe self-esteem problem)
- Mary from 'Low Level Panic' by Clare McIntyre (she is raped and this is her 'I'm-coping-but-I'm-not' monologue)
- Charlotte from 'Beyond Therapy' by Christopher Durang (a very odd psychotherapist)
- Libby from 'Blue Window' by Craig Lucas (a woman who is severely injured and her husband killed in a fall from a balcony)
- Claudia from 'Nuts' (a prostitute put into a mental asylum who tries to prove during the course of the play that she's not 'nuts')
- That girl from 'Suddenly Last Summer' by Tennessee Williams who is going to be forced to have a lobotomy by her kind-of mother in law
- Monika from 'After Dinner' when she has a few too many valium and alcohol cocktails has a fairly wacky monologue

This is just a very tiny selection. Don't discount the possibility of 'creating' a monologue from a dialogue. You could take a crucial dialoge from 'Don't Say a Word' and just use Brittany's lines put together so they make sense as a monologue. As someone (in fact many someones) have said before, your best possible sources for monologues are the Dean Carey books, 'The Actors Audition Manual Volume I' and 'The Actors Audition Manual Volume II: Masterclass' (Male and Female editions) from Currency Press. They have great acting technique 'mini tutorials' in them as well as being chockers with monologues (including most of the ones I've listed). If you're in Perth, the Arcane Bookshop on Williams Street in Northbridge always has them - they're not expensive and they're a great investment.

Hope this helps,

[%sig%]
