A Doll's House
directed by Grant Malcolm

Ibsen's classic drama penned in 1879 languished for nearly ten years before being produced on an English language stage. Its appearance forshadowed the outrage that was to face performances of some of Ibsen's later works.

A century later, I remember being stunned by outbursts from the audience during a recent production of A Doll's Houseat the Subiaco Theatre Centre.

The play centres around the dilemma of Nora, a young woman struggling to define herself in the face of enormous pressure to submit to the role of wife, mother and care giver. Although applauded by some of his contemporaries as a moral tract supporting the emancipation of women, Ibsen himself might have maintained that its theme is about the need for everyone to discover who they really are and strive to become that person - a call for individualism that has defined the 20th century.

This is a relatively small cast play offering some fantastic roles! I'm still working on adapting an out-of-copright translation and the combined roles of Anna/Ellen (Elena) may yet be cut from the script.

NORA - female, 20-30's
TORVALD - her husband, 30+
DR RANK - a friend, 35+
CHRISTINA - a friend, 30's
KROGSTAD - a lawyer, 30+
ELENA - a nursemaid

Auditions for a three week, mid-June season in the Dolphin Theatre will be held Sunday 26th March from 10am. If you would like to audition but are unable to make this audition time, call me as soon as possible to make an alternative time.

Please call and confirm an audition time if you wish to avoid a potential wait on the day.

During the audition you will be given the opportunity to present a prepared audition piece - if you have one - and will be asked to read from a section of the play.

In preparing for the audition, i would encourage you to read the play. I don't expect that people should memorise a section for audition. However, if you already know the play well and have your heart set on a role, by all means prepare something from the play for the audition.

Scripts available online
A translation of A Doll's House, not necessarily the one we'll use, is available.
