About a month ago I installed Windows 7 and since then I haven't been able to format my reviews properly. I have tried doc and docx. neither worked.

The article looked good in the writing box but the preview never came out like the box layout.

I have used Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome none worked well. Often I tried to submit my review only to be told it contained less than 10 words - when it actually had 500. When I went back from the preview the whole article would have disappeared.

Has anyone any suggestions plase?

formatting

I.m having the same troublr Gordon! At home I'm still on XP and I can post on this site without problems. However if I use the theatre computer which has Windows 7 installed i can't post a thing!! So far no-one has been able to either offer me an explanation or do anything about it!!! Very frustrating.

I just posted a comment in agreement with Gordon and got told it was probably Spam and wouldn't be posted until an administator had a chance to review it!!!!

Microsoft Formatting

I've been doing some research on this from when you last asked me. You could try saving the file as RTF or Rich Text Format rather than DOC or DOCX.

Microsoft adds a whole pile of MS Specific HTML code which often makes things look messy when trying to translate to HTML, even in a Copy and Paste.

Some additional advice here http://accessproject.colostate.edu/udl/modules/word/tut_rtf.php

Unfortunately...

Both the comment and the main post used key words frequently used in SPAM email. Both were flagged as SPAM, but I review all these flags and usually within 24 hours.

RTF

The RTF doesn't seem to make much difference - sorry

Agree

Gordon, I have to agree. It appears the present version of Office does not convert to RTF while on screen. It seems that when you are using Word, it creates the extra MS Coding anyway, regardless of the format, so the issue becomes copying and pasting from Word itself.

One other method I have used in the past to great effect is to Copy from word, Paste to the Body box while it is NOT in Rich-Text mode. This pastes the document in PURE TEXT stripping all of the MS code out. You then Copy the text from the Body box, switch to Rich-Text mode and paste again. You can then apply formatting.

This is very much the same as copying from Word to NotePad (as mentioned by another), then from NotePad to ANY WEB PAGE, not just this site. Either option is a sure fire method of stripping MS Code.

In this case, you can thank MS for their unecessary HTML coding for making this a complicated task.

Easier

Download Office GL,(It is FREE from Oracle) it has the same functionality as the Office suite, use it instead of Word. It copies perfectly. Or you can open a word doc in Office GL and paste it. Saves you heaps as well.

Research

I have been doing dome research in to this problem, and I may have a solution. I am currently testing with this very text, so we’ll see if it works. Now, I am using an Older version (2003) but the same problem persists. If you copy and paste text written in Word, there are a whole swag of Word Specific extraneous formatting codes that get copied with it. This attempts to maintain the page width and so forth and can cause formatting ugliness.

However, if you save your document as Web Page Filtered (sometimes Filtered HTML) first, the extra code will be removed. When I tried this, a dialogue appeared warning me that certain formatting options would be removed. I expected this so clicked ok. My text changed a little as Microsoft formatting was removed but the Italics and Bold remained. Then when I copied and pasted the document, WITHOUT CLOSING OR REOPENING, and ass you can see, it pasted something that works quite well on this site.

Once posted, I did need to do a small amount of editting, but on the whole, the formatting was alot better.

thanks

Thanks Jeff.

My last couple of entries I copied from word onto this site - having opened it on Internet explorer. I tidy it up a bit. Then cut and paste it from IE onto this site opened with Firefox and it seems to work. However I tried to edit a technician's name and found that it was no longer editable. Still looks neater.

I will try your method next time. Many thanks
