When writing the title of a play on programme cover or in an article, which is correct? e.g.

‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’

“One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”

‘One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’

One flew over the cuckoo’s nest

One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

‘One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’

Or do you have a version of your own?

Depends

Technically, as I understand it;

  • Programme title: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • Referenced in an article: "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (although I have seen it with single quotes, or even underlined.)
  • When not making reference to the play, film, book but that a cuckoo's nest was actually flown over: Then one flew over the Cuckoo's nest. ... Or is that cuckoo's nest?

Absit invidia (and DFT :nono:)

I've been told that italics

I've been told that italics is correct for the title of a play, rather than quotes when referenced and I'd agree with Jeff with regards to capitalisation. www.meltheco.org.au

Italics. Look at any

Italics. Look at any Australian publishing style guide. For any title of a book, work of art, movie, play, etc. it's always italics.

The West Australian

The West Australian newspaper doesn't use italics or quote marks.
