I'm 17 years old, with minimum experience, I am looking for any opportunities or auditions to improve my talent and start to get into the industry. I was trying to get an agent but do not have the funds to afford one and have tried looking for auditions with no success. If you could help me out please let me know. xxxxxx Keeli

No Need for Funds

Na has already provided the link that you need to read. More importantly, an agent should not require a joining fee or mandatory upfront payments to go on their books. They are meant to take a cut from any earnings you make when doing jobs. Obviously, there may be optional extras that you may be asked to pay for such a photo shoot, but they should be optional. If you already have photos, a video show reel, and the like, then you should not have to pay anything. Some agents also insist that you attend workshops which is another way of ensuring an upfront payment. There are enough star-struck hopefuls out there to make this a very profitable option for an 'agent', and some will feel no obligation to follow through.

If you don't have photos, video show reels and the like, then you may want to consider investing some time getting them, yourself. Student Film productions, while without fiscal payment, can provide great experience and help you compile a great show reel of stuff. Additionally, don't pass up student photographers whom are often just as good as the professionals. Eventually, you will need to get professional photos, but that can set you back substantially so you will need to start putting something aside now.

www.starnow.com.au is a good website for finding local student and non-pay work experience opportunities. Occasionally, a paid job will come through. However, with any site like this, be careful. Anyone can post an advert and the site admins are not able to check the validity of all postings. You apply at your own risk. The big hint is and always; if they ask for an upfront payment, chances are it is dodgy.
