Acting Competitions?
Mon, 3 Jan 2011, 10:39 am Hi, everyone. I just wanted to ask whether anyone knows about acting competitions in Australia. I've tried to look for them, but it's hard to find anything concrete... Help, please?
Thanks all,

What part of Australia are you in?
In Victoria there are a plethora of amateur adjudicated one act play festivals where awards are offered for individual, group and technical merit. Contact the Victorian Drama League for information about when and where they are scheduled.
Around September each year the Ballarat Theatre hosts the annual Royal South Street Society Eistedfodd. Various artistic disciplines are on show including group, ensemble and solo acting catagories.
Entry fees are usually payable for festivals and each competition has it's own set of rules. Awards can vary from locally crafted artworks to trophies and small cash prizes.
I would imagine that most states in Australia would have their own annual circuit of these sorts of comps. Perhaps contacting a local amateur theatre company might be a good start. Someone on committee might know or be able to point you in the direction of someone who does.
The Short and Sweet play festival is the closest thing I can think of to a 'professional' acting comp. There are often very good actors and directors involved and the cash prizes on offer for the catagory winners are very generous. See the Short and Sweet website for details.
Hope that helps.
