{proof} - production in Busselton
Mon, 9 Aug 2010, 01:15 pmIf you want to see some good drama in regional WA, or feel like coming down to enjoy the magnificent scenery in the South West or even if you are thinking of venturing down because of CineFest Oz, then consider encompassing all three desires and come along to Busselton Repertory Club’s Weld Theatre between the 19th and the 28th August to see {proof}, a Pulitzer prize winning play by David Auburn, directed by Michael Taylor.
We would love to see you and show you some real hospitality.
Synopsis
Robert is a genius. As a young man, he developed mathematical proofs, theorems, in three fields: game theory, algebraic geometry, and non-linear operator theory, basically inventing the mathematical techniques for studying rational behavior and re-energizing the area of astrophysics.
The play is set nearly forty years later in late summer on the back porch of Robert's once elegant, now sadly neglected, house in the Chicago University campus area of Hyde Park.
It is the eve of the 25th birthday of his youngest daughter, Catherine, who has spent much of her life at home, forgoing most formal schooling and all social life, to care for her father who has, for some time, been mentally unstable.
Catherine must deal not only with his sudden death but with the arrival of her estranged older sister, Claire, and with the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's, who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that Robert left behind.
As Catherine strives to understand her feelings for Hal and confronts Claire's plans for her life, she struggles to answer the most difficult question of all: How much of her father's madness - or genius - will she inherit?
