‘We’re talking reality/We’re talking humanity/We’re talking of a plan to be/OVERWHELMED by the sheer totality/and utterly believable three-dimensionality/of all the things that Anne can be’ - Scenario 5, ‘The Camera Loves You’ The Sydney University Drama Society (SUDS), Australia’s longest continuously running theatre company, is proud to announce ‘Attempts on her Life: 17 Scenarios for the Theatre’, by UK playwright Martin Crimp, as its major production for 2009, by arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd. She is a terrorist, a porn star, an artist and the girl next door; she is none of these and all at once. ‘Attempts on Her Life’ follows an unseen character called Anne as an ensemble of 11 attempt to describe, criticise, categorise and destroy her. In each of the seventeen scenarios, her identity transforms. ‘Attempts’ is, unashamedly, theatre about theatre, but also deals with political concerns ranging from the spectre of international terrorism to the driving forces of Western consumerism, daring to balance high ideas and kinetic theatricality. The deepest questions of post-structuralist thought are examined with visceral intensity and absurd comedy. Blood-spattered philosophy sits next to hilarious self-reflection. If you care about theatre, if you hate the theatre, see ‘Attempts on her Life.’ May 6 – 16th 2009, 8pm Cleveland St Theatre, 199 Cleveland St, Surry Hills Bookings available at trybooking.com/RH Proudly Sponsored by SUDS, The University of Sydney Union and The Royal Exhibition Hotel
