WAAPA Foundation Course.
Fri, 6 Feb 2009, 07:14 pmHi Everyone :).
This year I am realy interesting in taking part of the WAAPA Foundation Course.
It goes for 10 weeks and you go there every Saturday for four hours, they have done it for a few years.
I was wondering if it is worth taking, and if anyone out there has taken it?
Keep in mind I am 15 years old!
I have very serious about acting, so I won't be some stupid immuture kid in the class,
But I'm still scared that people will think I'm weird, or not good enough.
Thanks!

Hi Hayley, I did the course
Hi Hayley,
I did the course last year and I highly recommend it. The youngest in our class was a 16-year-old girl and she managed the content just fine. We had various levels of experience in the class as well, and it's a massive testament to Tamara (the teacher) that everyone was able to work on their own strengths and weaknesses and get different things out of it.
If you're unsure then I definitely think you should give WAAPA a call and discuss it with the teacher - we had Tamara Cook; I'm guessing she might be taking the course again this year. She should be able to judge if you're ready to take the course. I mean, there's certainly no harm in giving it a shot, but it's a fairly big time and financial commitment and you might be better off waiting a couple of years until you have a bit more experience behind you, and you may get more out of it. Having said that, you may be streets ahead of others your age in ability and confidence, and ready to train at that level. Best to speak to the teacher, find out more about the course and figure out what's best for you.

A few more questions :).
Hi Louisa,
Thank-you so much for your reply!
I definitatly will give WAAPA a call and speak to the teacher.
I read about it last year and it was too late to enroll but it is something that I really want to do, and I think I could benefit from it alot.
I just wanted to ask a few questions,
1) What were some of the things that you did?
2) Did many people do it? Or do they split them up into smaller groups etc?
Thanks.

No worries 1) The course
No worries :)
1) The course was split into two parts - 7 weeks of acting for the stage and 3 of acting for camera. The first part covered a lot of topics - how to warm up effectively, monologue preparation, scene work, improvisation, character development etc. We were also put into pairs and given a scene to work on and present at the end of the course. In the second part we were taught on-set protocol, sticking to marks, portraying emotions and thought processes truthfully and so on, culminating with us preparing and performing a monologue for the camera.
2) There were about 15 in our class and we all worked together as a group, except of course when we went off to rehearse partner work or monologues.

Wow.
Thank you so much for replying again!
Wow, I knew the course was good, but this makes me even more excited about it, haha. It's sounds perfect.
Oh okay, what a relief, half my fear was that there was going to be 30/40 people in the class! And I don't want to make a absolute fool out of myself in front of that many people if I made a mistake!
As soon as I know they are on, I will call straight away and enrol!
Thank-you again.
