Acting course in the UK
Fri, 19 Sept 2008, 06:24 pmHi
I was wondering if there is anyone here who has gone to the UK and has studied acting? If so how did you do it/afford it? because all I can see is that they are all fill time (mon-fri 8:30 - 5pm). As living expenses are high in london it would be hard to study there and work and make ends meat paying for fees and living expenses.
i was wanting to talk to someone who has done it because i am looking at doing it next year.
does anyone know if there are any acting degrees that are offered part time or on evenings and weekends?
thanks
Tas

There are a number of
There are a number of universities who offer information for international students on their website, including stuff about employment and making ends meet: why not start there first?
For example (Central School of Speech and Drama in London):

Additionally, a number of unis would offer scholarships, and you can also try to get sponsorship from an organisation over here.
I'm sure there are heaps of P/T and weekend classes you could take, but it obviously depends on where you go and what you want to study; I'm not going to even try to post a list since it would be quite long.

thanks
Thanks
I have had a look at the part time courses however they will not get me where I want to go. I want to do a degree in acting so that I can be in movies and shows and gain the amaizing experience I want.
I am going to try and get a scholarship or ask someone from here to sponsor me. I was thinking of askin the QLD Theatre Company, since I love in QLD, however i dont think that they would give it to me because i have zero experience. Do you have any other suggestions in regards to companies i should approach?

Um, don't approach theatre
Um, don't approach theatre companies. You should be looking at government grants, overseas scholarship funds and philanthropic funding bodies. Theatre companies do not sponsor students and would most likely slam the door in your face if you asked.
Additionally, if you don't have experience in acting, then it's unlikely you'll even get into a course overseas unless it's very entry level (ie. not on par with VCA or NIDA). I suggest you try studying here first, especially as you don't want to do part time courses. To get into full time ones overseas, you will probably need some sort of experience as class sizes will be low and spots competitive.

still going to try
I'm going to try for next year entry if I don't get in then I will study here. If I do get in great. I have had a look at the CV of some of the actors that have studied there and lets just say that some of them haven't had any experience or training and they still got in.
so we will see what happens.

Were these actors local to
Were these actors local to the UK before getting in? There's a difference between applying locally and applying internationally. For a start, universities tend to accept students from overseas when they know they can front up the fees: an international student can pay as much as 10 times the fees as a local one. Additionally, overseas students may be expected to have more experience/dedication, because, as mentioned spots are competitive and lecturers won't want to waste one on an international student who might be just applying to get a visa and run off later.
Sorry to sound harsh; I'm just trying to say, don't put all your apples in one cart. Do your research; if you're really that keen, make an overseas call to the course coordinator/dept. head and have a chat with them about their course, the audition process and what to expect if you get in.

I have done my research
Na
thanks for the advice but I'm not going there for the visa, I'm going there because I genuanly want to act and although there are really good acting courses here in australia there are better ones there and there is more work there.
I don't want to work on Neighbours or H&A over here I think my talent can be put to amaizing use over there and more doors will open for me in the UK.
I'm not sure what impression you got from me, maybe you think that I want to do it for the visa, but thats not it, I'm doing it because it's my dream and with 3 years training in one of Londons best schools I know I will be miles ahead of everyone else here in Aussie that hasn't had the training and even the ones that have had training.
I think the students that don't have the eperience were born in the UK. I have done a lot of research, its going to cost me about 10,000 pounds a year, when it costs a normal UK student 2,000 pounds a year if they get assistance through a government scholarship.
I have already called and emailed many schools in the UK and I have a few meetings when I am there (which is in 2 weeks). One thing I'm not is an idiot I always do my research first before I do anything. I know what thier audition process is and it goes for like 6 months, 2 monologues in the first audition, then a call back audition and then a call back for a workshop, if they still want you they will call you for another workshop and if they like you after that they will take you. the enty is a lot more harsher then the ones in in aussie but the success rate is a lot higher.

I'm not suggesting that you
I'm not suggesting that you are going just for the visa. I'm suggesting that it might be tougher to get in than local students and lecturers may be looking for more experience.
(Speaking as both a friend of an international student who came here and as the daughter of a university lecturer who dealt mainly with international students)
I wasn't implying anything about your skills, intentions or anything else. I was trying to explain things from the university's POV. I'm glad you're doing your research, and I wish you luck...
Side note: I've been lucky enough to check out the spaces at Rose Bruford College in London. It's a fantastic place, and I recommend you check it out. As I recall they offer places to int'l students and regularly audition here. (Acting classes near a pond and a barn theatre; plus a small in-the-round venue)
