The Picture of Dorian Gray (profit share) Auditions!
Mon, 18 Aug 2008, 11:29 pm - - THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY - -
*****AUDITION NOTICE*****
Following a sold-out first season earlier in the year, Diatomic Productions returns to the Monash University Student Theatre to present Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. It will run from October 7 - October 19 and will be a profit share production
The play is a 3-act traditional theatre adaptation of Oscar Wilde's darkest work and only novel. It follows Dorian Gray, a young nobleman who falls so in love with his portrait that he wishes it should age instead of himself. This it does, and as Dorian slips further into the abyss of personal and social tragedy, his friend and mentor Lord Henry Wotton watches on.
To join members of the ensemble from the first season, we will be auditioning for:
1. DORIAN GRAY
the central character of the play, Dorian is a young male actor able to play naive and curious as well as selfish and self-obsessed. He is on stage for almost the entire time and will very often play the straight man to Lord Henry's biting humour.
2. SIBYL VANE
the love interest for most of the play, Sibyl is a young female actor with the ability to combine both a strong and aluring stage presence and a naivity of her own power over others. She is the lead female role in the play.
3. DR ALAN CAMPBELL
JIMMY
MERCUTIO
one of the strongest characters in the latter half of the play, Dr. Campbell - one of Dorian's former friends who was drawn down to depravity while following Dorian - sets up the mechanics leading to Dorian's eventual fall. Requiring a male actor able to convey a sense of gravity, Dr. Campbell will also take on 2 small roles in the earlier stages of the play.
4. SIR THOMAS BURDON, MP
FRANCIS
THE DRUGGED MAN
THE GAMEKEEPER
with several minor characters to play, this part requires a male actor with timing and charisma able to play a young lordling at dinner, a
reserved manservent, an opium affected drifter and the head forester at Dorian's country estate. Sir Thomas has the ability to perform a scene-stealing rambling monologue during Act I.
5. MRS VANE
LADY BENNETT
playing both the mother of the lead character in Act I and a lady at dinner in Act III, this part requires a strong female actor able to portray maternal devotion. The role of Mrs Vane especially has the opportunity for exploration and discovery.
6. LADY AGATHA
LADY CAVANAGH
SCARLETTE
these roles require a versatile female actor, able to portray both stately elegance and the affectations of a 19th century prostitute. All 3 are speaking roles with an opportunity for strong physical acting in the role of Scarlette.
7. LADY ADELAIDE
LADY WILDE
GINGER
similar to the roles immediately above, the female actor who takes this position will vary in character between a Lady of Society and a lady of the night.
Members of the ensemble will be heavily engaged in the production, even when not appearing on stage as the set, designed to be easily movable to create spaces, and props will all be brought on by members of the cast.
Also, the Book Sequence that concludes Act II involves all members of the Company in a choreographed representation of Dorian's mind as he is 'poisoned' by Lord Henry's book.
AUDITIONS will be held on Monday August 25 and Tuesday 26 (earlier individual auditions may be arranged if necessary)
REHEARSALS will be determined by consensus of cast availability
