Blak Yak gets serious . . . ish
Sat, 31 May 2008, 10:50 amHi,
Blak Yak has copped some criticism on this site in the past for staging adaptations of well known TV programmes and movies. Yet when we mount a production which is not one of these, NO ONE COMES! Picasso's Women last year had maybe 50 people attend for the entire season, we lost money on it, yet it won 3rd place at the Finley's, plus a gong for Gemma Northover for Best Actress.
Already this year Blak Yak has had to cancel a production due to a lack of interest right from the word go. In Quest of Conscience, which was to be directed by David McGarr, was pulled because it couldn't be cast. Yet if we were doing something like Dr Who we would have been inundated with people and the season would likely have sold out.
The point of this rant is: Blak Yak has a show coming up. It's not an adaptation, it's not a well known play and it's not by a well known author. What it is is a very funny, very well written script that deserves an audience. It's being directed by Nick Donald (an award winning director) and stars Scott Northover (winner of Finley for Best Other than Lead Male in 2007), Kristen Berry (one of Picasso's Women) and Alex Jones (in his first role upon returning to Perth).
Deus Ex Quanta, written by E.F. Doucette, opens with two detectives and a body in a locked room. Who killed the man? Who is the man? Who are the detectives? Are they real? What is reality?

Please, please, please, if you are able to, come and see this play.

Reaping what one sows
Sat, 31 May 2008, 12:38 pmMM's plug has a valid point, but I fear that this may be a bitter harvest for Blak Yak; "It's not a Pratchett? Ah, can't be bothered!" etc etc....
Doesn't change the fact that it sucks no-one's coming to your non-TV-derived shows, but you were warned...
