In Search of a 'Grease' Car
Sat, 23 Feb 2008, 03:22 pmI'm currently designing the set for a school production of Grease.
As a car plays a main role in the production I'm looking for any contacts that have either staged Grease previously or others who know of companies where a 'Grease' car/theatre car/display car can be hired from.
I wouldn't really want to put a real working car on stage (especially being a school production) so a light weight frame or a car with removed parts would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Profile cut flat is the easiest to produce & the kids could get involved.
I designed a set for Greece many years ago. with a false stage deck & a revolve inset. two trucks one each on OP & PS, that were utalised for the different scene changes. The car flats were mounted on one & pushed on as Kinneckies old car, upto 3 O'clock on the revolve. A spigot was dropped into the revove & it was turned clockwise. Picking up the PS truck pulling it on the revolve, while it turned. When the truck got to 9 o'clock it came to rest in the centre of it.
For the smoke & effects for the Greese Lightning transformation. The revolved turn thru 180 degres & revealed the Grease Lighting car in all it's glory.
unfortunatly it never happened as we never managed to get the full grant. The producers wanted to go with a real hot Rod & dummy it up for the old car. they didn't quite understand the mise en scene is primarily cartoon colours & allow the punters to use thier imaginations.
The pics I seen of an American production in which they used a series of portable rostra, to depict the varoius scene locations & also for the cars - looked to work well!
So I'd suggest a double sided cut out profiled flats on a truck. would simple enough to make & keep it simple!
