is the Australian Talent Management agency good?

Recently an extras/acting/modelling agency called Australian Talent Management (ATM) has been advertising current castings all over Australia-wide online job listings. I have been in contact with them regarding a TV series being filmed on the Gold Coast, but I can't find any information on them (other then their job listings and website). Does anyone know this agency? Is it another NOTM? I'm a bit concerned. They allow for a free listing on their website but in order to actually be presented to clients, they suggest you upgrade to a $100 yearly membership. I was in touch with NOTM a year ago and I recall they had a very similar system of membership. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated. I suspect there will soon be an increase in interest in this agency following the recent spate of casting listings.

What worries me is their

What worries me is their slideshow of girls in bikinis... Obviously more a model agency than an acting agency. I would suggest using their about page and finding second and third parties who would confirm their CVs. This is from their service page: "ATM contains photos, resumes, skills, profiles and video/audio reels for our artists, each with their own individual look, experience and skill base. So chances are that having logged on to ATM, you’ll find the ideal person right at your fingertips." "Serious artists are listed on ATM. Artists obtain their own personal ATM site profile which displays photos, a resume, profile information, video footage, audio reels and more. " So it sounds like it's just an online artist registry, which is searchable by casting agents. And you probably get some basic free features when you sign up, and then if you want special features, you pay. It's not uncommon, but I'd read all their policies very clearly before giving money. (Really, do they put in an effort promoting you, or is it just a matter of giving you web space. If it's the latter, you may as well build your own free website... if it's the former, it may be worth a look) This is just my opinion based on their site, it would be more worthwhile chatting to someone who is signed up/has used their service. 1) ATM are registered as a legal business entity: they clearly state 2) They list their collateral. 3) They list their legal information. 4) They have multiple office locations. Conclusion: They are like every other actors/extras agency, they are just marketing themselves a little different.

Australian Talent Management

I have just finished working for ATM on a television series with channel 7. I worked with 14 other extras from the agency. They seem ligitimate. Tesesa is a lovely lady she even offered to pick me up and drive her to the set this morning as I was going to use public transport, then they paid for the taxi for me to get there on time. I think it is rude and wrong to compaire them to other agencies, I did research on them before working with them and they checked out. Look at the About Us on there website!!! All I have to say is WOW. If I am wrong about them and I have any problems getting paid I will definalty let you all know. I hope I am not wrong.

respected actors' agencies do NOT charge up-front fees

The issue, Joseph, is that respected actors' agencies do NOT charge the people they represent up front fees. When you sign up with a legitimate agency and they get you work then [with some variations] the going rate is around 10% commission that they will charge you [although many are charging up to 20% for TVCs]. This has been discussed before here at some length from memory. In most states up-front fees are illegal. Jim

Just because they have an

Just because they have an actual CV listed on their website doesn't mean it is true. If you are ever unsure of an agency or the background of someone you are going to be in business with, then you NEED to check their references and have the CV proven through three or four other sources. 'Seeming' legit is not the same as being legit. (I'm not saying that ATM is or isn't legit. I'm just saying that you should never take something for granted, and you should always do your research before signing up with an agency. I have met very nice people who would gladly give me a lift to a show; but some of them have also stiffed me on pay, or suddenly become uncooperative. Or I discover later through a trusted friend that the person has done some dodgy things. Do your research, find coroboration for their references, and talk to as many people - both people who signed with an agency, and those who didn't/left - and it will more than pay off... Also read Jim's post below. Do some bloody research about what agents should and shouldn't do. Learn about your own rights, before you sign something that you will later regret) Sticky Apple Legs www.freewebs.com/stickyapplelegs Puppets in Melbourne www.thepromptcopy.com/pip

What I have to say

I am working for ATM and let me tell you that after hearing from some of our extras that I should review the forum on this site I am appalled. It is a little disturbing that I am reading such cynical comments from people who assume the worst. We have had no one asking our firm for neither references nor validation of our management team’s credentials. I agree that resumes can be falsified and you do need to check references however it is ridiculous to post defamatory comments without even requesting this... It is free to join our books and in no way is it a prerequisite to work for our firm to join the higher levels of membership. Our higher levels of service that are offered to people who can afford to show commitment and contribute to the initial setup costs of promoting them to almost 2500 advertising agencies, casting directors and production companies. There are too many people in this industry that simply send in applications so they can claim there dole check. The costing of our optional higher levels of service are well below other similar websites and our network is second to none. We also are prepared in many cases to cover all the costs for us doing this providing that the applicant shows the right attitude. To Mr. David Green We have no affiliation to any other agency in Australia our network is world wide we have offices in New York, India, Brisbane and Melbourne. I took the time out to do what you didn’t do and that is research you. This is what I found: “I started running companies is because people told me that I was too young, too inexperienced, not funded and didn't have the education behind me…all the while these people are stuck in jobs they hate, flipping burgers, focusing on their studies, or not even doing anything.” And low and behold your website has copied everything we do. All agencies based in Australia are governed by a code of conduct given to them by Industrial relations you can ask any agency for a copy of the code of conduct and by law they have to provide it to you. This code of conduct clearly states how an agency is allowed to trade if you find that our agent is not trading within this code of conduct contact our legal team and we will help make sure that your rights are full understood by the agency. I may be wrong, but David

I may be wrong, but David Green is a member of D2A, and not a staff member of the company. (David please correct me if I am) If so, then it seems you didn't do enough research. We're not posting anything defamatory - just warning people to do their research before signing up. And thank you Thomas for registering (which is free), and providing your own, confirmable, details. (Insert sarcasm here) From the description of the site, that you have given Thomas, it sounds less like an agency and more like a website that offers 'promotional services'. You are right, there are plenty of these around - Arts Hub, QuietonSet, etc. They are not necessarily rip offs, nor am I implying that yours is. I'm just trying to get young and emerging artists (like those that post to this site looking for work) to try and RESEARCH their options, rights and expectations. We did have someone post a scam alert for a US-based website recently, and it is easy for the legitimate sites to get caught up in the sweep. It is also easy for people to assume that a bad service is a good one simply because they assume that there are other good services out there, so this must also be good. Now, how about you register for the site, post some contact details, and offer our reading audience some verifiable examples of what the company has done for local actors. No thanks. I'm not an actor, and I have no interest in coming to see you - to chat about what I've written here no doubt - when you still have done nothing but provide what I can already find on your site. And you will see in my previous posts, that I have not said you are not legit or respectable. Just that people should be informed before they sign anything. I believe that is one of the things that MEAA and other peak bodies suggest? And in fact, if you read the start of the thread, I do my best to defend the agency, keeping with the 'innocent til proven guilty' concept. The only thing I ever stated was that a) we needed more information before giving a yay or nay answer, and b) that commissions should only be taken after gaining work, not before. Perhaps you need to clarify whether ATM is an agency - ie. finding work for their represented actors - or whether it is a subscription service - ie. the along the lines of Quietonset, Arts Hub, and Giglist, and other promotional websites. Meanwhile, you've not done your research. I'm a woman. (And you could have worked that one out quite easily by visiting my site) And thanks so much for researching everyone else but me... amazing how you take the time to do that, but still don't provide any details about yourself, or anything else that can't be found by going to ATM's site. No, I don't need help with web design and marketing. We don't have a budget. Not only that but I am currently waiting for some time when I can properly redo my site (and it also depends on what site you looked at. Well, my web stats showed you spent all of two seconds on my blog, and more time on the Freewebs site. I am waiting til Dec to stop using the Freewebs site, upon which I'll transfer it to my domain name.) I currently work for a web company, so I know all about marketing web sites. That's not the problem; we're not currently producing any work, so it's hard to market ourselves if there's no shows to publicise. Yes, more research is better. Let's get the facts straight

I’m afraid it is going to take a little bit more then a few harsh (if not misdirected) words to throw me off. Now let’s review the facts shall we: First: My website has a link to Dare2Audition, just as it has a link to the ITA website and the FTI website. If you would examine where the links are it says “We highly recommended these websites for those wishing to start in the entertainment industry:” These are not my websites, these are site I have used and been apart of either through acting or for my companies. The entire posting you have just made is from the D2D website, not mine. Only my welcome is from my website. Second: I meant what I said about “The reason I started running companies is because people told me that I was too young, too inexperienced, not funded and didn't have the education behind me…all the while these people are stuck in jobs they hate, flipping burgers, focusing on their studies, or not even doing anything.” It also finishes with “I could never justify doing that to a person and will encourage you to achieve your full potential. Please enjoy this site and have a fantastic day.” My company “Dragon Films” is a production house, not an agency. If a person would like something from the entertainment industry or requires my company to make something for them we are able to help out. Third: I am a free member of Dare2Audition, I have not signed up as a member or company. I am happy to let others know that work is available. Helen, who is the owner and creator of the website, is a good friend of mine, but I have no affiliations with the website apart from posting auditions. Fourthly: My first post on this issue is sound advice. An upfront fee is illegal and some agents do ask for money for photos and putting people on the website; however you may ask the agent to take this “fee” out of your first job, that way there is a incentive for the agent to find you work otherwise they will not take you on their books. Your comments “Unlike you Mr Green we are a team of highly trained very experienced people and have a huge amount of funding. Enough money to sue you, for defamatory comments like the ones you posted.” Like I have said I was not attacking you company, I was only stating that if people want to get an agent, to DO THEIR RESEARCH. Fifthly: The ITA website is a forum of discussion where people like kuraiza can ask the questions like “Is this agency legit?” I merely gave some information about a pervious “agent” who posted on a job website and what kuraiza could do to see that she is not ripped off like I was. Even your comments Thomas are valid here because it shows people where you come from; the same as my comments. Now if you do not like my comments you are entitled to your opinions, but you do not have the right to say you will sue me for deformation when the entire posting you have just done is for the wrong site. I did try to research your website but when I typed it into Google you were not there. This is another reason why I did not attack your agency personally because there was not enough information, so I gave advice to people regarding agents. I would also like to thank Na for defending me. It is really appreciated. :) I hope everyone will have an opinion to continue on…but in the mean time… Keep Smiling :) David Green DRAGON FILMS www.davidgreenenterprises.com

Distinction needs to be made

I think a clear distinction needs to be made here between an agency and the kind of service provided by a number of online sites. Dare2Audition was specifically mentioned. Simply put, an agent doing their work represents an actor by promoting the actors on their books to casting agents. According to the person purporting to speak for ATM, "Our higher levels of service that are offered to people who can afford to show commitment and contribute to the initial setup costs of promoting them to almost 2500 advertising agencies, casting directors and production companies." As such they shouldn't be charging up-front fees for this service. As I said, this is illegal in most states. D2A and other sites like it are not in the business of promoting the actor: they provide resources both for actors - who have to be proactive to get anything out of the site by promoting themselves - and casting directors. It is a resource for people in the industry - a passive go-between in that sense (in fact the owners of that site are actively building up their resources such as auditions notices, etc) and their services. In other words, they are providing information to their members for an affordable fee that [especially] emerging actors can access. That they are not masquerading as agents is apparent from the profile form which has an item asking the member whether they are represented an agent or not. The D2A discussion forum which has covered the agents issue likewise supports this. Members do not enter into a contract for representation. So, ATM cannot justify charging up-front fees by comparing themselves with D2A, Quietonset or any other such membership service. They do not provide the same services. Jim

ATTN-Felicity Harper

We are always happy to speak to members of the press, simply put we would ask the reporter to contact us as we can provide her with contact numbers of casting directors we are working with. Attn-James McDonald I suggest you take time out to read the code of conduct given to the industry as you clearly have not read it. To anyone reading this forum the comments and options expressed by people in many cases are not informed and do not do any more research other than a Google search. Often people writing these comments have a vested agenda to promote another company or indeed work for another company. I suggest that you take what you read here with a grain of salt and make up your own mind and do your research. Ask yourself who is running the firm? Who can they promote me to? What productions have they been involved with?
NaThu, 19 July 2007, 10:02 am

What? What vested interest

What? What vested interest do I have? I am a puppeteer, and a freelance techie. I run no agency or website that would compete with ATM. I work for a non-arts related theatre company. And the problem with your above posts (granted, you left a phone number) is that you didn't provide enough information for us to do anything but do a Google search. (Why is it that you are willing to offer verifiable info to a 'reporter', and not the rest of us? ... Oh yes, not doing your research again. Felicity did not state she is a reporter, but was referring to the fact that an agency, commented about in a different thread here, was 'interviewed' on Today Tonight.) Again I ask - post some verifiable examples. Otherwise, enough already; the debate has run its course. Let readers get on with other topics and stop flooding this thread with repititious posts. Walter PlingeThu, 19 July 2007, 10:23 am

Enough already agreed

As any experienced actor or casting agent knows an agency should not disclose specific information regarding any television series they are working on to the public this is confidential and leaking this information is a big no no. However if we are being interviewed by members of the press who may or may not (I am not aloud to confirm or release information on this) be working for the very network we are working with we would simply ask the reporter to contact there own casting department. And I wasn’t referring to you madam I was talking about David Green who clearly bagged us without doing any research on us and conveniently had a referral on his site to a website what appears to have cut and pasted most of our material. I have a job to do I will go back to doing it, Over and out.
NaThu, 19 July 2007, 10:28 am

You could quite easily post

You could quite easily post information about previous work - which wouldn't be leaking - which is what I meant. And if you have issues with a website that has cut and paste your content, do not blame David. Blame the website that copied it. Thank you Na for once again standing up for me. Now Thomas I can understand that you may feel that I am the bad person here for making comments about agencies, but like Na has mentioned I cannot be blamed for other people’s actions. I have no affiliation with D2D apart from posting auditions which is how the owner and I became friends. That is why I also have the link to the ITA website and the FTI website, both of which I have posted auditions on and had great responses. Again I did not “bag” your agency in any of my posts. I have merely said for everyone to do their research and if it is found (which I am not saying you are) that there is either not enough information or a negative reputation, that people should avoid such agencies. I think Na is right and that this argument has gone on long enough. An opinion was asked and I gave my two cents worth which appears a lot of people support, agree, and reinforce. I hope everyone will form an opinion on this matter and especially thank Na for vouching for me. Agents, auditions, acting sites & accusations!!! lol!

Well well well! I have phoned Thomas this morning, but he was not available to talk to, regarding his negative attitude towards Dare 2 Audition, although not directly in competition we do provide inexperienced actors with a safe alternative to an agent, until they have gained enough experience to land a quality agent, which we encourage, so therefore are in competition to some degree. Competition is never a good gauge or can rarely give an unbiased opinion. Therefore I will provide you with what our members have to say.

I have a question about headshots. I noticed our Sydney friends get a discount with Rapideye for their shots, is there any similar agreement set up for those of us in Melbourne?
Keep up the good work, it is very much appreciated,
cheers, Amanda Simpson ...

Thanks to D2A I was able to apply for The Pacific War and have been offered a audition in Melbourne this week, although I have been told they are a bit of a cattle call initially. If any other roles like this come along can you sms me please.
Thanks again

Thanks for your help with the casting. I have sent my profile through as instructed to the production company.
I was unaware that we told you of auditions and castings we received from the site.
I have had so many auditions that I don't remember them all! After Dinner, Run, and been cast in The Divine Plan and Bad Language. I have also put in applications for The Pacific War and other productions I do not recall of the top of my head.
The site has been great and I am able to look at it each day and find something new to apply for. I have been really happy with everything.
Thanks again

Subject:TV pilot auditions

Hi there
Just wanted to let you know that Tayla will get to be an extra in the TV pilot. The audition was a great experience for her. She's very happy.
Thanks for the opportunity
regards
Lynne

Hello Again Helen,
I just thought I'd let you know that through your website, I have had the opportunity to audition for so many roles. And right now I am working with Merlin live Productions on a feature film, which I am so thrilled about.
So thank you so much for your efforts! You might like to know that any actor I meet, who isn't particularly familiar with online audition websites,
I send to D2A : )
Good luck with the site : )
I hope it stays active for a long, long time.
Take care,
Nicole

Hi Helen,
Thankyou so much for all the work you have put in to Dani's CV, your site is fabulous, we go in every day to have a look and read all the news.  The newsletter is terrific too.  You must be working 24 hours a day to get so much done, the site has come so far.  Everything is really helpful, we have read everything on the site.  Were also one of the ones who asked about printing out the auditions lol.
Thankyou for all your hard work, and thankyou also for choosing Dani to do her showreel, it is really appreciated.
Kind Regards
Kim

These are just a handful of messages, which are from our paid members who are happy to pay for membership, the small fee is so minimal compared to the support, opportunities and encouragement they find at D2A. We are not an agency and do not charge a fee or commission for work sourced on D2A, other than our yearly memberships which varies depending on the services you wish to utilize. The special we have on is to celebrate our new format, agent affiliations (now we have a system agents can manage their talent from) and new casting opportunties, for the month of July.

may I join the rest of the site...

In saying "YAWN". The debate has run its course people. Thanks to Helen for her posting (giving info on the co., the work offered/sourced, contact info etc.) this is both useful and informative. Thanks to both David and Mr (!) Sticky Apple Legs for their input which states clearly time and again- We don't KNOW if there is anything wrong with this agency, there isn't enough info. However, one- do your research, 2- never pay up front fees before you get work. Thomas thanks for being here, but take 2 secs to actually listen to what was said/asked and either respond to the actual questions being posed, or stop threatening everyone left right and centre. It does not actually make your company look any more reliable or reputable. The opposite in fact. I'm no lawyer, but have some experience in legal matters, and remain unconvinced that anything above would constitute defamatory material. That said, you can always prove us cynics wrong (I'm pretty sure we're mostly able to take it) by posting the material requested. Anyways, I said I wouldn't write anything, and another b'''y essay pops out. (Get back to work man!) Nev It's the simple things stupid...

What our clients have to say

Thanks for that Thomas it was heaps of fun yesterday, I was nervice but the casting people were very kind and looked after me I am looking forward to the next job. Dont worry I know I cannot tell anyone about the sceine. Where do I send the invoice? Melissa Cheong Hi Thomas its Kelvin thanks for getting me in the production I love this sort of work. I also appreciate the training you gave me it helped alot as I would have hd no idea what I was doing without that. I have been associated with Australian Talent Management for the past couple of months and have found them to be very helpful in kick starting my modelling / acting career. They organised for my hair and make up to be done and a photo shoot to make a dvd for my portfolio which turned out great. They are promoting me Australia wide showing me that they are a dedicated agency who will look after me. Melanie Osmond 16th July 2007 Hi Tomas Thanks for the opportunity to work on the TV series it is soo much fun, I like the fack you speak chinese also it made me feel much better as my english is not always that good. I will repeat what has been

I will repeat what has been said. No-one here has said your organisation is not legit. What many people have said to the people who read this thread is 1/ Do your research and 2/ Don't pay a fee up front. It is OK to pay for services such as photo shoots and so on provided you are paying a reasonable market based rate and not over the top. It is illegal in some states of australia for an agency to demand fee payment up front. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

How exciting

An advertising war Companies slagging off eachother. Just like in real life. Oh wait... I am sure privacy laws have been breached here. Express permission is usually required from the referee (read refer-ee) when advertising a company that runs for-profit. I am sure that ATM and D2D have asked permission of everyone they referred to use their likeness/identities. David Green said: "If I was you I would go with one of the bigger agencies because at least you know they have the reputation and clients behind them." From someone who has no agent? Note One: Beware of who gives you advice. I would not heed any advice of someone untrained and unqualified. David Green said: "...my companies" Australian Law requires all companies operating in Australia to have an ACN, which in turn demands an ASIC listing. Individuals or partnerships that are not registered as an australian company are a business, and not a legal entity. An ABN that applies to an individual, partnership or trust fund may then operate and trade using one ABN for any number of endeavours. David Green said: "Helen...is a good friend of mine" Read:All and any statements herewith referring to d2d are biased. David Green said: "...I suggest you boycott this agency." David Green said: "I was not attacking you company" Sic. David Green said: "I did try to research your website but when I typed it into Google you were not there" All hail Google, the mightiest "if it's not here it doesn't exist" codex ever imagined. Not. David Green said: "An opinion was asked and I gave my two cents worth..." That's the problem with seeking information on the internet:whether the opinion is valid, true, backed by fact or by fiction, the monkeys have as much power as the monarchs.

Attn-Rory Mac

After reading the comments we asked our clients that worked on our most recent contract to give us testimonials and references for public viewing. We will not sit by and let other organizations or individuals make comments about our firm without defending ourselves having said that the ATM team is totally over this whole thing, I nor anyone else in our organization care to make any further comment on this website. Thank you Rory for pointing out what I would have pointed out after my 12 hr shift. It is 645pm I started today at 6am we work like this 6 sometimes 7 days a week. When the directors say jump we say how high sir, we have to deal with people not turning up, turning up late, people calling us that are only trying to waist our time. A whole range of dirty tricks played out from our competition, but though it all passion dedication and old school hard work is what prevails. If it takes us driving an actor at 5am in the morning to a set to make sure they get there on time we do it. If we have to pay for a flight to Darwin for an actor to get on set on time we do it. What ever it takes, whatever we have to do. Wherever we have to go, we get it done.
