Black Books Roles
Fri, 23 Feb 2007, 11:35 amHi,
The following is a very brief rundown of the roles that are available in Blak Yak's upcoming
production of Black Books. As you can see, there's twenty characters.
Nick, the director, will be looking for about five or six actors to play all of them. Most are for either male or female, just because the name is one or the other doesn’t matter. I gave most of the characters names to amuse myself, they can be changed very easily :)
More information about the auditions can be found here http://www.theatre.asn.au/audition/2007/black_books
Dickens: Male or female, any age. Wants to buy some Dickens but needs to be sure that they’re “real leather . . . because they have to go with a sofa”. An arrogant type.
Woody: Male or female, any age. Wants The Little Book of Calm, needs The Little Book of Calm, will go crazy without The Little Book of Calm. A nervous, stressed type.
Franz: Male or female of any age. Wants a biography about Schubert, is happy to wait while the boys do a book search, but is it possible to get some coffee while waiting?
Justin: Male or female of any age. Just a customer, just wants to browse, really just wants to be left alone.
CeeCee: Male or female of any age. Wants to buy a book, but really three pounds is just too much. Mock indecisive, thinks they’re great at bartering.
Hal: Male, aged between 25 and 40. As Fran says “he’s a total arsehole but he’s got this voice and it just does things to me”. Must have a deep, radio sort of voice.
Russell: Male or female of any age. Has the nerve to want to buy a book when it’s lunchtime!
About to have phone wrecked customer: Male or female of any age. The name kind of says it all. Customer makes the mistake of answering a mobile phone in the shop, Bernard doesn’t like mobile phones, end of story.
Dubya: Male or female of any age. Originally this character’s name was Shouty Customer. The actor must be able to shout in an imposing, almost frightening, manner.
Gilmore: Male or female of any age. Is happy (get it?) when Bernard leaves the shop, now they can buy books.
Wine Wanker: Male or female of any age. Actually this character doesn’t have anything to do with wine in this scene, but in the episode we stole the bit from he’s a real wine wanker, you know the sort? The kind of people that take classes and go to tasting and spit the wine out!
Angelina: Female, any age. Is going on holiday with her boyfriend and wants something light to read.
Brad: Male, any age. Is going on holiday with his girlfriend and wants something light to read.
Flaps: Male or female of any age. Just wants to buy a book but wears an unfortunate hat, earning her the name.
Helen: Female, 20 – 35. Gorgeous, manages to buy the book Flaps was after.
Williams: Male, any age. Needs to be imposing looking as he punches out Manny for selling Helen the book that Flaps was after but had actually been reserved for him.
Dostoevsky: Male, any age. Didn’t come to the bookshop to be insulted . . . silly man.
Sigmund: Male or female of any age. Wants to sell a box of Freud books.
Eva: Female, 25 – 40. Fran’s healthy living, healthy eating, yoga doing friend.
Rowena: Female, 25 – 40. She’s the female Manny, nice, a little awkward around people, nice, shy and did I mention nice?
Plus various other customers who come in and out of the shop, to be yelled at, humiliated and abused by the staff of Black Books.
