Fremantle Festival… call for submissions

WANT to be involved in this year’s Fremantle Festival in November? Then get yourself animated and make a submission before May 15. The City of Fremantle is currently seeking expressions of interest from arts organisations and community groups who want to be involved in the annual 10-day festival, now in its 101st year. In 2006, the Fremantle Festival has the theme Animate, completing a trilogy of themes, after Illuminate in 2005 and Resonate in 2004 – and submissions should reflect the 2006 theme in some way. Cultural Development Coordinator Lou Westbury said the Animate theme could be interpreted in many ways and it was entirely up to artists and performers as to how they approached it. “We hope the Fremantle community becomes animated with the arts as they engage with this theme in numerous ways,” she said. “The Fremantle Festival is about place, community and the artists who live and work in our port city and we strive to reflect this each year in our program of events.” Five main free events are produced by the City of Fremantle – the Wardarnji Aboriginal Cultural Celebration, South Beach Kite Extravaganza, Carnival Day, Lotterywest Street Parade and the main opening event. “We need to achieve a balanced program overall with broad community appeal so we’ll be considering how the events submitted fit together with other program initiatives,” Ms Westbury said. “This way we can create an exciting festival and provide a cavalcade of activities to fully engage the vast array of interests across the community. “The festival program embraces all sorts of art forms, including dance, music, film, theatre, visual arts and literature – but people making submissions don’t have to be restricted by this list, as long as they highlight how their project can fit into the program.” Applications should include relevant information such as estimated budgets, resumes and photos and address the following points: ● How the proposal responds to this year’s theme Animate. ● The innovative nature of the proposal. ● Opportunities for the community to participate. ● Capacity of artists to deliver the proposed event (budget outline needed). ● Whether further support is sought from the festival. ● How the activity is to be promoted – and if information and photos are available for publicity. Application forms must be received by the City of Fremantle no later than May 15 – forms are available from Fremantle Festival Operations Coordinator Doreen Johnson on 9432 9728 or e-mail doreen@fremantle.wa.gov.au ** For more information, contact Cultural Development Coordinator Lou Westbury on 9432 9716 or e-mail LouW@fremantle.wa.gov.au
