Film - Synecdoche, New York

Okay, so my wife and I went to see Charlie Kauffman's new film Synecdoche, New York yesterday, and I find that my brain has turned to mush - to be brutally honest, I didn't get it. I'm not saying it was a bad film; I actually don't think I can even qualify whether I liked it or not - I just didn't get it at all.

Okay, so to me the film lacked any form of linear plot and seemed to be a juxtaposition of surreal/abstract/mundane views on life/death/fear and the world around us. Suffice to say - that didn't gel in my mind at all. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance was truly moving/powerful and evoked some very strong emotional responses in me. In fact, this is true for most of the performances. I'm pretty sure that the strength of performances is what I managed to connect to within the film - although I can't be positive. The film seems to continue to resonate in my mind even though it has me thoroughly confused and befuddled. One minute I think to myself "Aha! So that's what that bit meant..." and then I second guess myself when I remember another element that manages to completely negate what I just thought.

If anyone has seen this film - I would love to know your thoughts/reaction. In particular, I think a writer's perspective would be fascinating to hear. I can't recommend anyone to go and see it, but if you're up for a total mindf*&^ then I believe this film will deliver. My wife feels that if you like David Lynch's work you will probably like Synecdoche - not having seen any of Lynch's films I can't make this comparison.

Comments welcome, even if just to say you didn't get it either.
