In the village it's been a while since young feet have walked the cobbled streets. In one despairing moment, Theodosias abandons his wife and gorilla child, then spends a lifetime trying to get them back. There's Meta, who is neither male nor female. And Yiorgos the Apeface, who is both man and beast. Young Agape of the Glowing Face who can stop men's hearts with a look. Here nothing belongs to you. People steal your letters and gossip your thoughts before you've spoken them. And when they're desperate they go to the whorehouse. From the centre of superstition, gossip, rumour, and chaos, Mirella the ancient whore, finds a calm place to tell her tantalising tale.

Written in a style akin to the 'magic realism' of Like Water For Chocolate and House of Spirits, The Mule's Foal won the 1993 Australian/Vogel Literary Award & the 1994 Victorian Premier's Book Award. The stage production adopts a sophisticated performance style which embraces abstract movement, mime, dance, original music with experimental sound and commedia style mask.

"Like acient story-telling, The Mule's Foal draws the reader into another world, yet there are signposts everywhere that lead to contempoary life. Mystical, sensual, intense: this writer has a poeticvision ." ANDREA STRETTON

Suitable for 12 years and over, Contains occasional coarse language.
