Lewis, a young director out to prove his mettle, jumps at the opportunity to direct a play with inmates at a mental asylum, with the instruction — “…to keep them interested. To bring them out of their shells. Give them something interesting to do.” Roy wants to do his favourite Mozart opera CosÁ¬ Fan Tutte, but his fellow inmates are not enthused. Ruth is troubled by the concept of a 'real illusion'. Zac insists on playing Wagner or falling asleep. Henry keeps getting up and walking out. Cherry and Doug are at each otherÂ’s throats. But Roy insists they must create the "harmony of spheres" that is to dispel the "clanging, banging, ... bedlam all around us." Lewis's world at home is its own kind of bedlam where he has to contend with escaping pigs, infidelity and the pretensions of his 'politically correct' friends. CosÁ¬ takes an affectionate and challenging look at madness and mayhem in a world where institutions can be less limiting than ideology.
