Set in the glorious thirties, Anything Goes features the Ocean Liner SS American and its unusual group of passengers on a transatlantic journey from New York to England. Included amongst them is Moonface Martin a gangster, Hope Harcourt, a wealthy debutante and her mother, Evangeline Harcourt. Reno Sweeney, a nightclub singer and one time evangelist – yes truly! A New York businessman, Elisha Witney and his stowaway assistant, Billy Crocker.
It turns out Hope is BillyÂ’s long lost love. Unfortunately, she is now engaged to a wealthy Englishman, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. After a series of crazy happenings and plots donÂ’t get much crazier than this, Billy manages to win Hope back. Meanwhile BillyÂ’s friend Reno, manages to seduce and win Lord Evelyn. All this happens while Moonface Martin attempts to escape the law aided and sometimes hindered by two Chinese men whose presence in the plot is questionable, irrational and good fun.
Anything Goes features a superb Porter score including I Get a Kick Out of You, YouÂ’re the Top, All through the Night and the signature tune Anything Goes.
