Once in a while we have an opportunity not only to be entertained but inspired by a performance of a play. Without doubt "A Fortunate Life", the play based on the book by A.B.Facey falls into that category.
This is a remarkable man who by his own admission considered himself to be very ordinary but by the experiences and events that took place in his life proved by any measure to be extra-ordinary. His ability to just simply keep going in the face, of at times unimaginable hardship, would be considered heroic in another era, he just considered them part of his day.
As one critic was moved to say "I am stunned by the horror this man endured in his childhood. I am humbled by his gentle acceptance of the good and the bad. This is an extraordinary and moving tale." Another critic said of this tale "The life of Bert Facey is a microcosm of the earlier life of this country, with those mighty totems the Bush and the War, looming monolithically over everything else."
