‘Would you have a love-song, or a song of good life?’
Our twins joyfully take to the air before their plane plummets... sirens, searchlights and finally silence. A lone figure watches over the girl pulled from the wreckage… a comedy begins.
This first offering by Perth-based company The Revellers, presents a darker variation of Shakespeare’s comedy ‘Twelfth Night’. Focusing on the isolation of its characters, a novel visual aesthetic is adopted and new life is injected into an old classic.
This Twelfth Night is a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play, with the characters all stationed at military posts. This is a world where generals Olivia and Orsino languish in their self-imposed isolation. Viola, a pilot and a stranger to this world, disguises herself as a man to gain acceptance and serve under Orsino. Through her subversion, bravery and charm, she rouses the segregated generals, opening them up to acceptance and love.
This high-energy, well-paced and engaging production is one of a number of Shakespearean adaptations set to tour schools. These Theatre-in-Education productions aim to be as educational as they will be entertaining, and demonstrate that Shakespeare does not need to be ‘dumbed down’ to be accessible to everybody.
