HILARIOUSLY reinvented as the smash-hit comedy that took Broadway by storm, Alfred Hitchcock’s vintage 1935 spy thriller, The 39 Steps, is set to provide Koorliny Arts Centre audiences with a jolly good night out next month.
Imagine four actors playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced, gripping action – that is the concept of this “frightfully funny” awardwinning farce, directed at Koorliny by Kim Angus and performed by the London Street Theatre Group.
The story follows the adventures of handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with the requisite British stiff upper lip, pencil moustache and gung-ho, as he encounters dastardly murderers, irresistibly beautiful women and double-crossing secret agents.
Venue manager Ryan Taaffe said 39 Steps was an interesting form of theatre in terms of characterisation, physical theatre and comedy.
“One actor plays Hannay, an actress plays three women and two other actors play every other character in the show – even the occasional inanimate object – sometimes even playing multiple characters at once,” he said.
Tickets cost $20 adults, $18 concession and $15 children under 15.
Performances will be held on March 23, 24, 9, 30 and 31 at 8pm and March 25 at 2pm.
