Playwright
Adaptation by Patrick Barlow
Director
Trevor Dhu
Harbour Theatre, Fremantle’s only and original Community Theatre for over 48 years, is pleased to present, By Special Arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd, the comedy thriller: “The 39 Steps” THE 39 STEPS adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s 1915 novel and the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name will be HARBOUR THEATRE’S first production for 2012. Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award and the What’s On Stage Award for “Best Comedy 2007” as well as numerous Tony Awards, the Broadway production finally closed in January 2010 after 771 performances which made it the longest running Broadway play in seven years. Set in the 1930-40’s, the play concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock adventure film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage, but with a limited cast. The play follows the misadventures of our hero, Richard Hannay, played by Chris Thomas, who accidentally meets up with foul play and international espionage, accused of a murder pushing him to find the real killers and save the country. Along the way he has to deal with romantic entanglements, authorities trying to catch him and the villains planning to destroy the beloved Great Britain. Aided by Joanna Zukowski, Sarah Cosstick, Michael Dornan, Christopher Kenworthy and Melissa Klimisch, who play every other character, including heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object, this play challenges the actors with lightning fast changes, along with the physical demands in mime and choreography required to play multiple characters at once. Thus the serious spy story is played mainly for laughs and is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including, Rear Window, Psycho and North by Northwest. This hilarious take on the original novel is directed by Trevor Dhu who has previously directed and choreographed West Side Story with the Mandurah Performing Art Centre to critical acclaim and features a stellar cast of actors.
