"Anytown"

by award winning playwright Hellie Turner
Directed by Janet Pettigrew

Welcome to town, folks ... don’t stay too long or you may never leave.

Accomplished director Janet Pettigrew and her vibrant cast join forces to bring Turner’s eccentric black comedy Anytown to life, premiering 10 – 28 May as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s Up Close season.

Stuck in their secretive, incestuous rural town, Dixie (Whitney Richards), the nubile town strumpet, wants what she wants; her parents, Bella (Gaynor O’Hare) and Charlie (Matt Penny), hanker after more than they’ve settled for; Angus (Kingsley Judd) has overstayed his welcome, Paulie (Craig Williams) thinks way too loud … and who the hell is Stranger?

Turner and Pettigrew performed together in the ensemble theatre group CAST throughout the eighties, developing a strong artistic relationship they are thrilled to have the opportunity to resume.

Pettigrew explains: “Hellie’s crafted a fine absurdist play that deals with the illusionary nature of life … the repetitious patterns, the endless purgatory and the need for ritual. We’re examining people’s fear of change and the unwillingness to do so … the fact we’re all hostages to our fears, habits and yearnings”.

In Turner’s words about her exploration of the human condition, “Anytown is a sweet delusion, a constant craving and an open wound oozing with suppressed desires. Anytown is every town … we’ve all been there and secretly long to go back.”
