subtlenuance in association with Tamarama Rock Surfers presents A Thing of Beauty The first of subtlenuance's 'pop-up theatre' pieces - designed to bump in and out in under an hour and be performed just about anywhere! It received a terrific review during its sneak preview in March and will now play the Late Night Sessions at the Old Fitzroy Hotel A captivating mix of movement, multi-media and razor-sharp wit that Australian Stage Online calls “affecting comedy and incisive social commentary, performed solo, and brilliantly by Richards…… it'll galvanise a cult following… it doesn't get a whole lot better than that written, and directed, by Paul Gilchrist.” Australian Stage Online Naomi and Ruth are travelling. But change is a challenge. And Ruth craves simplicity. She finds it - in snow-domes, guidebooks, mannequins - anything to make the mayhem manageable. Jo Richards creates two hilarious characters in this comedy about chaos and order, and the one thing that keeps them apart – A Thing of Beauty After training in Paris at the prestigious Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School and then travelling throughout Europe, actress Jo Richards became intrigued by mannequins and began to photograph them, fascinated by the subtle differences in the presentation of the human form. Back in Sydney she struck up a collaboration with critically acclaimed playwright Paul Gilchrist, creator of Catherine at Avignon - “Like Stoppard ….superb and very playful….. a significant achievement in writing, direction and staging, Gilchrist is obviously a playwright worth watching.” Media Culture True Times Three - “I can't really bring to mind the last time I laughed as loud and, almost amidst it, felt the agony of intense, searing tragedy.” Australian Stage Online Talc & Two Gates – "Both plays had lines any ambitious writer would wish they'd written... Both augur well, not only for subtlenuance's future as a distinctive, important, independent voice in Australian theatre, but for the future of Australian theatre at large." Australian Stage Online The result - A Thing Of Beauty - a captivating mix of movement, multi-media and razor sharp wit.
