Footy legend Wattsie and radio fave Bazza Martin re-unite for charity show.
In the 1970s, Perth people used to wake up with football legend John K. Watts and DJ Bazza Martin regularly.
It was all part of their popular breakfast radio show which, at various times, was on 6PR, 6IX and 6PM (later becoming 92.9), and hold a record as the only Australian breakfast program to more than 50 per cent of the population in its ratings.
The former breakfast buddies are holding a 20-year reunion show at West Perth's Perth Soccer Club on July 23, full of skits and jokes to raise money of the Variety Club of WA.
Event organiser Graham Harris said Martin was flying in from Adelaide especially to be part of the event, hosted by popular compere Allan Symons.
"It's a chance to re-live some great times, catch up with terrific people and support a wonderful cause," he said.
"Our aim is to raise as much money for Variety as possible to help the kids out there."
Playing football for East Perth and Geelong in the 1950s and 60s. Watts went on to have a successful radio and television career for more than 30 years, working for several WA stations, and even wrote jokes for Bob Hope.
He teamed up with Martin in the mid-70s to create their unique breakfast radio partnership, which led to them being employed by Kerry Packer at one stage.
"Their material was often controversial for its time but it was all in good fun," Harris said.
"The jokes often pointed fun at other sports, politicians, other footballers and even themselves.
"Wattsie and Bazza really want to help Variety WA in its efforts to provide for sick, disadvantaged and special needs children.
"The impact of Variety's help can never be underestimated and, by coming along tot he reunion show, people will be supporting ongoing efforts to make the world a better place for thousands of needy kids."
The Wattsie & Martin 20-Year Reunion Show starts at 6pm, July 23, at the Perth Soccer Club, located at 3 Lawley Street, West Perth.
