Script development organisation ParnassusÂ’ Den presents its inaugural production of The Department Store, by Justin Fleming.

About the play: It’s called PARADISE. And it leaves Harrod’s for dead! PARADISE is the most immense, dazzling, sumptuous department store in the history of retail therapy. But it’s hell for Denise Baudu and her uncle, Paul, whose tiny boutique must literally be crushed to make way. They sharpen their scissors for the fight. There’s just one problem: the capitalist ‘monster’ behind the Paradise is no monster at all. Octave Mouret is young, charming – and he’s in love with Denise!

The Department Store explores what happens when simple human values are brought to bear on a sumptuous, commercial empire of intoxicating power. Set in Paris during the late 19th century, the themes and issues explored in the play are universal, ageless and as relevant today as they have ever been.

The play is based on Emile Zola’s thrilling novel Au Bonheur des Dames, set in Paris in the 1890’s. The novel has never before been depicted on any stage in the world. Cast includes: Kit Brookman, Isabella Dunwill, Jonathan Elsom (15 Nov–19 Nov), Jonathan Hardy (26 Oct–13 Nov), Fiona Press, Christopher Tomkinson, Rebecca Turner and Kirrily White. Directed by Christopher Hurrell.

Where: The Old Fitzroy Hotel, 129 Dowling Street, cnr Cathedral Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney. When: 8pm Tuesdays–Saturdays, 5pm Sundays. How much: previews (26–27 Oct) and cheap Tuesdays $16; concession $19; adults $27; beer, laksa and show $33 (or $24 on Tuesdays).
