Monash Academy of Performing Arts presents
Our Country’s Good
Written by Timberlake Wertenbaker
By special arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd
Directed by Kate Cherry
Performed at Chapel Off Chapel
Based on the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally, Our Country’s Good demonstrates the power of the play to transform lives, even those considered unredeemable. With wonderful insight into the life and lives of the first Australian settlers, we are transported into the convict settlement, where Governor Phillip has decided that a play would be a better proposition for entertainment than that most enjoyed by the convicts - hangings.
In the open space of Australia, leaving the hedges of English life, the convicts abandon the narrowness and meanness of institutional behaviour to find the ability to trust each other and stage a play. Filled with humour, pathos, issues of life, love and death, Our Country’s Good is great adult entertainment.
Kate Cherry is our distinguished director, well known to theatre going audiences as Associate Artistic Director at Melbourne Theatre Company and prior to that, Playbox. The Monash University Academy of Performing Arts is delighted that she has joined us to work with the Graduate Ensemble in their final production for 2007.
