Shadow Passion - A stunning new play from multi-award winning dramatist Anthony Crowley Catherine and Robert Harrow seem to be the perfect Canberra couple. Catherine is head of surgery at a private hospital and Robert is a senior public servant for the Department of Immigration. Wealthy and privileged they are also caught in a destructive tryst of calculated and erotic self-mutilation. Despairing for a child after the termination of a down-syndrome pregnancy, they have turned sex into a sadomasochistic cure for their physical and emotional barrenness. Then into their life steps Ali Hadji, an Iraqi refugee and in Catherine’s eyes the embodiment of irresistible suffering and fertility. After a year of temporary residency, Ali is about to be returned to his own ravaged country. His desperation provides the flashpoint for a volatile escalation of events fuelled by passion, politics and overwhelming desire. Written, directed and designed by award winning playwright and theatre-maker Anthony Crowley [2002 Wal Cherry Award, 2005 New Dramatists Award] Shadow Passion is his long awaited follow up to the critically acclaimed The Frail Man. In it’s world premiere production, Shadow Passion features some of Australia’s best creative talent including lighting design by Paul Jackson [The Odyssey, Sleeping Beauty], sound design by Russell Goldsmith [Exit The King], costume design by Doyle Barrow, film art by Brad Picken and an extraordinary cast led by Danielle Carter [Something In The Air, Underbelly], Andrew Blackman [A Country Practice], Ali Ammouchi [Through The Wire], Sue Jones [Correlli, Halifax F.P] and Glenda Linscott [Janus, Prisoner]. "Shadow Passion is self-assured and enthralling. This is the sort of work our state theatre companies should be producing – accessible work about real people and real lives. There are elements of it that are disturbing, hard to watch, and even harder to reconcile with – but it is brilliant, compelling viewing. One not to miss." - Australian Stage (www.australianstage.com.au) ** Shadow Passion contains adult content, coarse language, nudity and smoking.
