"…I shaved my face until I grew a beard so that a gay man would go out with me." Following a successful, sell-out season of Zen's Red Mouth (Winner of the 2006 Blue Room 'Member's Choice' Best Production award), Mythophobic Productions brings you the world premiere of Hope is the Saddest; showing at The Blue Room Studio from 13th-30th June. This exciting full-length version follows the successful debut monologue presented at Shorts and Smalls (ARTRAGE Festival 2006.) Combining performance, machinery, subversion and song, Hope is the Saddest tells the story of three people lost somehwhere between reality and make-believe. Firstly there’s Theo, a post-teenager who builds machines to explain his feelings. Then there’s Marion, the compulsive liar who lived her childhood travelling in a suitcase. Finally there’s a young woman called Hope, who has set out on a mission to bring happiness to the world through her love of Dolly Parton. "You must take action, for hope coupled with inactivity is a deadly combination." Drawn together by their love of Dolly, the creative team including Jeffrey Jay Fowler (Zen's Red Mouth), Michelle Anderson (Mary Surefoot's Shoe Collection) and Natalie Holmwood (City of Cake) have set out to devise a show inspired by Dolly's music and lyrics. All three creators graduated from ECU together in 2005 with a BA in Contemporary Performance, jointly delivered by WAAPA and SOCA (School of Contemporary Arts). They have collaborated for shows several times since graduating, including The Love Pirate and Motor City Blues, which toured to the Adelaide Fringe last year. "As Dolly says "We cannot change the wind, but we can adjust the sails."" Hope is the Saddest will be a hit for people of all ages. If you are a Dolly Parton fan, Christian, homosexual, compulsive liar, emotional baggage junkie, or none of the above, this is the heartbreaking comedy to see! theo is the most confused, marion is the loneliest, but… hope is the saddest.
