Strider, a piebald horse born into a herd of thoroughbreds, is ostracised by other horses and humans because of his unusual markings. His thoroughbred and champion traits are recognised by a prince, who buys him and with whom Strider spends the best years of his life.

Now a sick old nag, Strider tells his life story to the other horses in the stable. It is one of unexpected triumph and undeserved despair, similar to that of his master's, a dissolute prince.

Strider is a symbolic expression of the determination of the pure in spirit and one 'horse's' commentary on the injustices of the world.
