After sell-out seasons of Noises Off, Rent, and I Love You, You’re Perfect... Now Change! as well as its award-winning season of Urinetown, Canned Laughter presents the side-splitting farce Lend Me a Tenor at NIDA this Feb.
Chicago, 1934 – The Cleveland Grand Opera is celebrating its biggest night in history: world famous tenor Tito Merelli, known to his fans as ‘Il Stupendo’, is scheduled to sing the lead in Othello. Through a hysterical series of mishaps, Tito is given a double dose of tranquilisers and promptly drops dead… or so it seems. Believing that Tito has died, the company’s assistant, a fairly gifted amateur named Max, is secretly drafted into the role of Othello, donning blackface and heavy costume to try to fool the audience into thinking he is Tito.
Soon, however, the real Tito wakes up and chaos ensues. Now TWO Othellos are running around in costume and two adoring female fans are running after them in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. Add a volatile Italian wife and a star-struck bellhop and you have a hilarious farce that will have you laughing all night!
Lend Me a Tenor, written by Ken Ludwig and originally produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, has proved to be one of the most popular theatre comedies of the past two decades. It has been translated into sixteen languages and produced in over twenty-five countries around the world. It won two Tony Awards and was nominated for five more including Best Play. It also earned four Drama Desks and three Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Lend Me a Tenor stars Matthew Foster, Lexi Hutton, Barry Fitzgibbon, Ben Wood, Heather Brandon, Amanda Buckley, Maxine Appel-Cohen and Steven Brandon as the Bellhop.
