“I don’t want revenge. I want understanding.” Oleanna tells the story of John, a free thinking university professor on the verge of attaining tenure, and Carol, his student on the verge of failure. We witness the aftermath of Carol’s sexual harassment claim and the brutal degeneration of their relationship from cordial to savage as a bitter battle for power erupts, spirals in on itself and twists from sanity and reason to primal emotion. David Mamet is one of America’s finest living playwrights. In Oleanna his use of broken dialogue is masterful - sentences stretch out like a row of jagged stones. In their Australian debut, Happy Dagger Theatre Company unites Mamet with an outstanding creative team, who between them have won no less than five Equity Guild awards: Jon Green, Andrew Hale, Nick Higgins, Renee McIntosh, Kingsley Reeve, Marcelle Schmitz and Bryan Woltjen. “There can be no tougher or more unflinching play than Oleanna.” Harold Pinter.
