After Dinner

A play about a night at the pub performed at the pub Go Theatre presents the acutely observed and wonderfully ironic Australian black comedy, AFTER DINNER by multi award winning playwright and screenwriter Andrew Bovell. Determined to forget their nine-to-five routine, five lonely singles head out to their local pub on a Friday night seeking an entertaining night out. Bovell’s bittersweet comedy kicks off at The Roxbury Hotel theatre in Glebe on June 13 and runs until July 8. AFTER DINNER is “an Australian comedy of sharp and black social comment, full of wry insights” (Sun Herald). The scene is a suburban pub. Three office workers – Dympie, who needs to control everything, Paula who lets her, and the recently widowed Monika are desperately seeking a good night out. At an adjoining table sit Gordon, recently abandoned by his wife, and Stephen, looking for something more than the usual one night stand. As the night progresses, inhibitions and social restraint are abandoned, exposing the foibles, pain and humour of the characters’ inner lives. Andrew Bovell is one of Australia’s most prolific and produced playwrights. His works for the screen include the hit Australian film Lantana (winner of seven AFI awards) and he also co-wrote Baz Luhrmann's, Strictly Ballroom (winner of AFI Best Film and Screenplay). Now a popular Australian classic, AFTER DINNER has enjoyed highly acclaimed and successful productions both in Australia and internationally. Go Theatre established Glebe’s only currently operating theatre at The Roxbury Hotel a year and a half ago by converting the pub’s function room into a performance space described by FBI Radio as “a fantastic venue.” David Jeffrey, co-founder of Go Theatre says that “staging our plays at The Roxbury Hotel theatre makes them more accessible to a wider audience and provides a fun and relaxed environment for punters.” Hamilton Becher, co-owner of The Roxbury Hotel maintains that “Go Theatre are a perfect fit with our uncompromising commitment to quality acts.” AFTER DINNER will be Go Theatre’s fifth production at the venue.
