Jean Rhys' inspired 'prequel' to Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea, gave Mrs Rochester - the madwoman in the attic - her own remarkable story.

But Rhys' own life was equally extraordinary and dramatic. Born in the West Indies in 1890, Rhys was forced to move to England, where she became an actress, but soon found herself living hand to mouth, on the brink of prostitution. Fleeing to 1920s Paris, writing became her only escape. After early success as a author she disappeared until Wide Sargasso Sea was published in 1966.

Based on Rhys' life and works and incorporating the character from Charlotte Bronte's novel,
After Mrs Rochester is a stunning production from the internationally acclaimed Shared Experience theatre company,
in which veteran British Actor Diana Quick gives a performance of heartbreaking virtuosity.

Coming direct from a triumphant West End season, After Mrs Rochester exemplifies the intelligence and
contemporary/classical style that is the Shared Experience hallmark.

'Shared Experience is one of the most distinctive theatre companies in the land. Those who have seen the company are unlikely to forget its thrilling productions' Daily Telegraph

'Theatre this engrossing is so rare I can only urge you not to miss it' Time Out

Polly Teale recently won Best Director at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, 2003 and was nominated for Best Play (After Mrs Rochester).

After Mrs Rochester was also nominated for two TMA Awards, the Opus Award for Best Touring Production and Sarah Ball for Best Supporting Actress.
