'Talking Heads' by Alan Bennett
“Talking Heads” is a series of short stories - Monologues - written and told from a single viewpoint - that of the character. We, the audience, are quietly invited to journey with them as they share their struggles, their lives, their thoughts and their courage.
3 Selected Monologues for Classic Theatre are:
1. A CHIP IN THE SUGAR (performed by Peter Byrne)
Graham is a middle-aged bachelor who is emotionally and psychologically fragile and in a mutually dependent relationship with his widowed mother. His relationship is however threatened when a former suitor reappears on the scene.
2. A LADY OF LETTERS (performed by Val Blake)
Miss Irene Ruddock is a middle-aged spinster who is emotionally isolated but masks her loneliness and isolation through her misguided sense of purpose, confusing fact from fiction which ultimately brings about her downful - however is also her salvation.
3. A BED AMONG THE LENTILS (performed by Philippa Chapple)
Susan, the wife of a Vicar - also known as ‘Mrs Vicar’ - struggles with her lack of identity and the perils and pitfalls of being 'married to God'. She is bored and pretending to enjoy her wifely pastoral duties seeks other avenues to find herself.
Alan Bennett's 'Talking Heads' is a wonderful exploration of the human experience under what may seem unchangeable circumstances which result in unexpected courage, strength and resilience.
