BREAST STROKE

The bare facts & fantasies about breasts. The journey of 3 women and 4 breasts. A celebration of beauty, life and loss. A story close to every womanÂ’s heart.

written by Carolyn Logan, directed by Vivienne Garrett music composed by Clive Percy, designed by Shannon Norfolk lighting design by Duncan Ord
starring Jenny Davis, Irene Jarzabek and introducing WAAPA Music Theatre graduate Melle Stewart

This critically acclaimed and highly successful play returns for a season at the Rechabite Hall in Northbridge 13 –29 March 2003. and then travels to the Powerhouse Museum, Brisbane as part of the Magdalena International Women’s Festival. BREAST STROKE was nominated for a Swan Gold Award for Best play in 1994 and is the celebration of the heroic personal journeys of three very different women.

In BREAST STROKE we follow Thea, Celia and Cherie, who meet in a hospital waiting room. As the inevitable forms are filled, we follow their stories back and forward in time. Delving into issues of female psychology and body image- what it means to live with a life threatening illness and how it affects the lives of the women and their families.

Thea recalls the sensual beauty of her breasts, which she has used for loving and breast-feeding. Cherie, a young dancer, understands them as tools of the trade and upgrades them with silicone implants and for Celia, a farmerÂ’s wife with a family history of breast cancer, they are a time bomb ready to blow.

There is hope, healing, resentment and despair, but above all humour and bravery – with a journey back to wholeness and recognition of female power. BREAST STROKE is the spirited journey of 3 women who unfurl the bandages and leave them as a trail, markers for other women who will tread this same road.

“ The Production is well paced and totally engrossing. It could change your life. I really can’t recommend it highly enough.”
