Basho, the great poet of the Haiku tradition, labours to remain on what he sees as the narrow road to Enlightenment, unable to grasp that desire for knowledge is mere ambition when it is unaccompanied by compassion for the human condition: "We live in a time of great change. It is easy to find monsters - and as easy to find heroes. To judge rightly what is good, to choose between good and evil - that is all it is to be human."
