Chookas to that.

Nice call, and just had to add comment to this - "Were there people that deserved nominations who didn’t get them?"

YES!!! THE BLOODY LOT OF THEM!! For getting up on stage for nuts!!! Am Theatre gets a bad rap at the best of times but anyone who can conquer their fears and face an audience deserves a nomination.

Absit invidia (and DFT :nono:)

This has really been something

Nicely said Nicquelle, I can only hope that this is the (silent)majority view..

To everyone- and not only the actors, but the unseen people who make it all happen and  the ones who ensure that the audiences are looked after when they do come to a theatre near you., well done and we'll do it all again this year!

Life's a bitch

I thought seriously about adding a word or two to this thread, but what the hell, I think I'll just stay fiddling on the roof.

from far away

I have read through the blog and you certainly are a vibrant lot over there in the west. I have had a giggle and a cringe and that's what it's all about, we don't have to "get" everything ! Congrats to all nominated and those not nominated for what sounds like a fabulous family with good and bad relatives. Now eat your cake !

Fear not Callan

Your post didn't spark anything - nothing wrong with it. It was the escalating hysteria of the posts that followed viz a viz "they're all biased", "You have to be a friend of the adjudicators", "boycott the awards" that did the damage. It was at that point I decided to hold a mirror to the behaviour on display....which is always fun to do :) Your last point is one I sorta raised myself last year, i.e no awards and just a night of communal celebration. The main obstacle to that is that the member clubs of the ITA in the vast majority want the awards to continue. I also sense they are popular with certain sectors of theatre - musical theatre in particular.

One Thought

Wow, with all this drama over who was and wasn't nominated and still there's some major departments being left out in the cold. For yonks the Finleys have been running and still no catergory for best Sound or Lighting Design? And what about our dear Stage Managers? It's not like that job is thankless enough without getting skipped over year after year. I'll just go hide in my biobox now...

One for the ITA to answer?

The quick answer is that sound and lighting design are usually covered in adjudicators certificates. Why they don't have a major award I'm not sure on Disgruntled. I think it may have something to do with the number of awards already in place but even typing that I realise that's not a great or satisfactory answer. Over to Kim and the committee for an answer. As for stage managers, the key problem I see with that is that the adjudicators can only judge what they can see onstage and a lot of stage manager work is done backstage, in rehearsal, etc and without being backstage to observe, it's problematic to adjudicate. You could argue that one way of assessing this would be the efficiency of scene changes but thats only part of the job. In summary, how do you adjudicate a good stage manager? That's my thinking and I believe that's why there is no award. I agree with you though - a good stage manager is worth their weight in gold. In lieu of awards I find they survive very well on hugs.

Short answer

Something we are working on. We've actually only had "individual" awards for a few years and we are adding them all the time. We have been covering this with adjudicators certificates because it has been difficult to distinguish between design and operation. If you have ideas on the best way to judge this etc Drop a line to the ITA. They are not an "otherworldly" body. Better yet...run for committee at the AGM in Feb. Tech Representation on the committee would be really appreciated and help up the status of techs.

If each production were

If each production were asked to submit an SM's copy of the shows 'Bible' [prompt book] &/or the 'Net [WWW] forms' such as Cue or running sheets. This surely would go along way to assisting with an SM's  adjudication.

Similarly other submissions for design consideration, as opposed to operations, can also include any of the mise-en-scène designs for Lighting, Audio, Sets & Costumes ect.

If you're going to take

If you're going to take submissions of prompt copys for SM adjudication than lighting and sound could also submit design plans, cue synopsis etc to be judged on. I'm curious about needing to distinguish between designer and operator since a board operator should be following the instructions of the designer. That said, I read a review once that praised my operator's fades between scenes - they were simply hitting a GO button while I had programmed the cue. Nevermind. Alternatively, backstage jobs can become a kind of "People's Choice" award, where directors and actors can nominate backstage people for awards using a kind of written testimonial or peer review. Difficult to judge still but at least ajudicators would be getting an idea of what the cast thought of their efforts. Finally, a technical judge might also be benificial. If they were allowed to tour backstage post-show with, say, the director and potentially meeting heads of departments. It takes away the anonymity of being judged but may also benefit judging of set and costume since the adjudicator gets to see another side of the production process. Anyway, congrats to those nominated, it looks to be a great night at the Finleys.

All good pionts &

All good pionts & suggestions!

But however this is all my eye 'n Marry Martin, as I doubt it will actually come into play. As it is my experience that the majority of comeatres are hard pressed to have the luxury of a designer beyond that of the operator, unlike academia.

In most regards they invariably just opt for what is there & bringing them in & out to suit the show cues.

The same with SM's who have no option other than to leave the cues for the operators to action & have them follow thier own script or just play it by ear at the appropriate time.

To assist Aunty Ita's Adjudicators?

This may assist the Adjudictors understanding the tech process?

BRAVO!!

I have had a look at all three of these hilarious little mini films Joe, and I am relieved (and a bit surprised) that there are not some out there for the "Sound Guys/Girls" of theatre...

(maybe it's because we able to hide better than the Lx crew.... no bright lights to stand in, just the dim blue, red and green glow from script lamps, led warning lights and VU metres....)

Thanks again for bringing some of the "FUN" back into our theatre worlds...(even if it does have to be imported from other countries !!..... :D )

"Each morning is the dawn of a new error" - anon.
