Big stupid grin
Monday 25 September 2006
I have a big stupid grin on my face that I can't get rid of. The one act play I wrote, 'Awakenings’, took home 4 of the possible 8 awards at the South West drama festival on the weekend. We were awarded the following;
The Jackson/Reeve Award Perpetual Trophy for Best Original Script
Best Supporting Female Actor (Gemma Scott as "Sophie")
Best Male Actor (Zen Fairborn as "Rufus")
Best Director (Sarah House)
I am very proud of my work and the contribution made by the cast and of course our very delightful director, who was brave enough to put on an original work. The weekend was such a delightful experience. I plan to write another play for the festivals next year, so I can go stay down at Bunbury and have a great time. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing other works and speaking to other performers and directors from around the state. It was fantastic to see so many people with a burning passion for theatre. It isn’t dead yet, that’s for sure.
I thought there was great improvement in the quantity and quality of original scripts, which rose from 2 last year to 5 this year. Keep producing original work. As Stephen Lee mentioned last year, new plays are the lifeblood of the theatre. I am looking forward to this weekend, where it’s going to happen all over again.
