Penzance Pirates Playing at the Playhouse!

Greg Ross

Tuesday 2 September 2008

Well, it seems that Teddy Boy’s Pirates have scarpered to the wild oceans of the Playhouse, in fact, as I write , with indecent haste, the dastardly bunch are holed up in the Green room at the moment … dressing for rehearsal.

Now some of you may even have heard Veronica Santoro and Ryan Huxley on Breakfast Radio king Eoin Cameron’s programme this morning, in fine voice. Actually it’s all very ABC, Edward Canute Bull is the Director, Prue Ashurst is the Music Director and Naomi Christenson is the Choreographer – ABC you see – A for Ashurst, B for Bull and C for Christenson.

Oh alright, I’ll go and get a proper job, shortly! But first, I have to confess a couple of things, Ted’s me best mate, so I said I’d help with a bit of promo and dig up a couple of snapshots for the programme, BUT, I’ve never seen a G&S thing in my life, although back at boarding school, I did have a part in some atrocious thing called The Batsman’s Bride! Oh God!

So Ted lent me a DVD of Pirates with Linda … Lovelace, NO! You know the bird … Ronstadt. What really got me, is that I never knew Patricia Rutledge could sing (Hyacinth Bucket, in case you’re wondering). Speaking of stars, I had the good fortune to meet Dennis Olsen AM and even take a photo or two, this bloke could teach us all a thing or two, in fact even Ted has said, “Oh Greg, I’ve learnt so much from him.” Mind you he probably wouldn’t be able to help me, as Old Mill Hywell reckons I can’t sing! Little does he know the Leonard Cohen tribute band is also rehearsing! Hale bloody lujah! Back to the show!

It’s very funny, with Ted’s quirky humour all over it and there are some very talented people in the cast, all 50 of them! The coppers are hysterical, Queen Vic, is, well, Queen Vic and the live orchestra (23 of ‘em) is fantastic. So if musicals are your thing, get on down to the Playhouse this week – Friday’s not a bad night, another mate of mine is the wine sponsor with his Geograph Bay company Brookhampton Estate – so if you fancy a decent Shiraz or Sauvignon Blanc, wangle an invite to the post show party.

The show’s on from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th September at 7.30pm, except for Sunday, which cracks open at 7.00pm. And, there are two matinees, at 2.00pm pm Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th, bookings through BOCS, ph: 9484 1133.

I’d post a picture or two, but this site is just too complicate for me, I can’t figure out how to do it.

All Good Things

PS: That bloody grim bloke’s gone and written a very, very funny full length play, I’ve told Ted he’ll like it and should audition and then backed Grim into a corner, saying “C’mon mate, go for bloody broke, put it on at the Playhouse, it’s that good.” Watch this space!
