Farcical Comedy
full length three act
Eight Female, Four male
Ambient is better known for a musical smash hit, "Arcadians" (1909) written with Alexander Thompson (died 1948) with music by Lionel Monckton (d. 1924) and Howard Talbot (d. 1928) and lyrics by Arthur Wimperis (d. 1953). A long list of credits, but seems to be public domain. This show ran for 800 performances in London and 200 in New York.
There are two completely unrelated western films with the same title. In "Oh! Sussannah", Doctor Jack Sheppard is open for trade in his rooms on Marmalade street, in the South end. He has the usual cases to manage in this portrait of everyday life at the bottom of London. Will they stop drinking? Can he resolve the malingering of the local layabouts?
These questions seem never so pressing as the subject of his social life. Exactly how long can a single city doctor remain unmarried? His clients and friends carry on with comic antics, despite their curiosity. The set requires a bath-tub, although a sitting bath and some water-proof floor covering would work. If you enjoyed "My Fair Lady" AKA "Pygmalion" then you will adore the spectrum of accents in this play from pearly cockney to posh twat.
