Musical Comedy by AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR five male, four female and Orchestra Roughly on the story of Ali-baba and the forty thieves (open sesame). One of the longest initial runs in history, with over 2000 performances. Appeared in film 1927 and 1934. Strong history of revivals as recently as 2008. Twenty two songs makes for almost continuous music - outside my scope of expertise. A Mammoth project. The play was written for a British audience, about a chinese setting, during the closing days of the imperial dynasty. I would love to hear opinions about whether the lyrics are suitable for courting trade delegations, relations between china and Britain being what they were then. Perhaps it is time we forgave the few prodigal Australian-born playwrights we have, for earning stirling.
