Copyright law is changing all the time - check the latest from Australian copyright council. Instrumental backing tracks for songs under an open license are quite rare. This is a list of music resources, for example - Directors inserting music into a play - Writers embellishing their work with a song - Vocalist auditions in public places - Zero budget streetwork, school productions etc. The Australian Performing Rights Organization (APRA AMCOS) has published a list of christmas songs, some of which are royalty free. http://www.apra-amcos.com.au/musicconsumers/christmassongsandcarols.aspx Here's a list of titles for songs which either have complete instrumental backing tracks, or single instrument musical stems which can be used as backing tracks, on an open license. - Josh Woodward deserves a special mention. Instrumental tracks are offered for all his songs. If a creative commons musical is written, it might be about him. www.joshwoodward.com - JAMENDO “Best Chritmas Yet” by Stellar Art Wars “Have you ever” by Breezeless (hilariously bad english.) Jungle Love (Whole Album) by Luc J. Kanis - CCMIXTER “Day Late and a Dollar Short” by Steve Bryant “Straight to the light” by Snowflake “Free Music Free Beer” by Admiral Bob “Harmony” remix versions off the scale. “Give it up” by snowflake. “God rest ye merry instrumental” by copperhead. There are also growing collections of music in the public domain MUTOPIA - try a search for 'traditional' MUSEOPEN And likewise new compositions with some rights reserved OPSOUND FMA EARTH MANTRA SOUNDCLOUD Music charts are a measure of sales. Obviously the trade-off is that performance rights (where available) for commercially successful songs are often not free. Conversely many songs offered for free on an open license get no airtime - in short - don't expect to hear anything you know. Don't forget to try approaching a musician, who may be delighted to hear of an opportunity for exposure.
