"The Barretts of Wimpole Street" (1930) by Rudolph Besier (1878-1942) twelve male four female Rudolph was born to a dutch family in Java and this was his only stage success. Filmed twice in 1934 and 1957. The play was staged because the female lead appealed to actress Katherine Cornell, who became known for the role. Based on the romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, and Barrett's father refusing the match. Elizabeth Barrett is a sickly girl who spends part of the play infirm, Some will find the play slow moving. For those who like gradual and articulate romance, this is ideal.
