First Scene is proud to announce the Victorian premiere of Terrence McNallyÂ’s Tony Award-winning play Love! Valour! Compassion! The author of the brilliant Master Class and Corpus Christi has given us a beautifully written, moving, and very funny play. He gathers together eight gay men at the upstate New York summer house of a celebrated dancer-choreographer who fears he is losing his creativityÂ… and possibly his lover. Infidelity, flirtations, soul-searching, AIDS, truth-telling, and skinny-dipping mix monumental questions about life and death with a wacky dress rehearsal for Swan lake performed in drag. The result is a stunning cross between a gay Big Chill and ChekhovÂ’s The Cherry Orchard. To see it is to join in a dance of life.

Characters:

Bobby Brahms: early twenties. Blind, lover of Gregory, a loving soul with a warm heart and great sense of humour. Wears his heart on his sleeve.

Ramone Fornos: early twenties. Latino (or Latino looking). Great dancerÂ’s body and not afraid to show it. Basically heÂ’s a sexual beast. Boyfriend of John.

Buzz Hauser: mid-thirties. Larger than life and hysterically funny. Hides the pain behind the quips. A walking encyclopaedia of Broadway musicals. Role originated by Nathan Lane and a tour de force for the right actor.

John Jeckyll: late forties. Bitter, twisted with an acid tongue. English. Another tour de force role as same actor also plays:

James Jeckyll: JohnÂ’s twin. The emotional opposite of John. HIV+, he is at peace with himself and the world around him. A beautiful character with a beautiful soul.

Gregory Mitchell: early forties. The dancer-choreographer, his gentleness and generosity centres the play. Has a stutter. The actor for this role should also be able to dance and/or have a dancerÂ’s build.

Arthur Pape: late thirties-early forties. Grounded, conservative, successful. Lover of Perry . Goes through perhaps the largest journey of the play as he throws away his restricted ways thanks to a crush on Ramone.

Perry Sellars: late thirties-early forties. Erratic, emotional, uptight. Learns how to love, enjoy life and respect his relationship with Arthur.

This is a true ensemble play and as such, we are looking for experienced actors with a total commitment to the success of the production. Not only do the cast appear nude (apart from John/James) they must also be prepared to don tutus for the Swan Lake rehearsal and learn ballet! This will truly be a unique theatrical experience for all involved in a play that has been highly anticipated for quite some time.

This is a profit share production which will run for 18 performances at Gasworks during the Midsumma Festival late January / February 2003. Auditions will be on Tuesday October 22nd.
