Synopsis:
A Sound Awake depicts the struggle of Oscar and Audrey within a world befallen by chaos and a cacophony of noise. Cocooned within their sound proof living quarters they are forced to cope with the daily struggle of maintaining their existence.
The world in which they exist is one that is familiar yet unknown to us. It may be some point in the future, it may be set in the past, or it may well be happening somewhere today. As the external environment slowly grows worse, with the noise engulfing it becoming louder, it pushes Oscar and Audrey to the extremes of their fight for survival. Sound Awake explores the inner struggles of Oscar and Audrey, the fragility of their relationship and the way in which their world has shaped their lives and how it will ultimately decide their fate.
Character Breakdown:
Audrey:
Physical Attributes
27- 33 year old female
slight build
interesting features
Personality
Audrey appears fragile because of her inability to venture outside. However she is a strong, silent character. She is has a creative mind and finds beauty in the most simple of objects. She is deeply attached to her memories of the past, which she fears are becoming more distant as the noise outside augments. She has always been a collector of things, associating different memories and emotions with particular objects. She is fascinated with colour and is saddened by the lack of it. She keeps her collection hidden uncovering it when she needs security or reminding of times already past.
Audrey no longer speaks and avoids making noise. Physically capable of speaking she chooses to communicate through sign language. Sound unnerves her as she associates it with the memory of her father, who went deaf after working in a wood-chipping factory for 25 years. She believed that his loss of his hearing killed his spirit to live. She values her own hearing and believes it to be incredibly fragile and unreliable. Yet she is intrigued by OscarÂ’s obsession with sound and will oblige him when he wants to record her.
