This story of the “dancing years” spans the period from 1911 through to 1938 and tells of an impoverished composer (Rudi) and his love for a famous young singer (Maria), his promise to a young girl who hero-worships him (Grete), the devotion to Maria of her long time admirer (Charles) and the love of a young officer (Franzel) for Grete. The show opens in the garden of an inn outside Vienna and moves to other settings in Austria. It is a poignant moving love story, but with lots of humour and all against the background of the beautiful music of Ivor Novello.

Note that some characters have to age as the show progresses from 1911 to 1927; Rudi and Maria only to 1938.
