There are NINE CHARACTERS (6 men and 3 women) as under : REV LIONEL TOOP - Village Vicar; Pleasant, stolid personality. 36-40-ish. LANCE-CORPORAL CLIVE WINTON - Handsome. Friend of Penelope. 26-30. BISHOP OF LAX : Large, jovial, middle-aged. REV ARTHUR HUMPHREY : Small, mild, inconsequential manner, not wanting to intrude - 40-ish. SGT TOWERS : Cockney policeman. Age is open, prefer someone older than younger. IDA : The maid - plain, likeable - trying to deal with the situations that present themselves in her usual manner. Looks around 18. PENELOPE TOOP : The Vicar's wife. Pretty - Late 20s. MISS SKILLON : The village spinster. Large, sour. Life has passed her by. 35-50 - well, age really depends on who is available, and what they can do with the role. It's a great role. THE INTRUDER : This is an escapee from a nearby German P.O.W. camp. Age is open, but certainly not too old. This person would need to pull of a pretty reasonable facsimile of a German accent. > SYNOPSIS : The Rev Lionel Toop's wife, Penelope is an ex-actress. While Lionel is away, Penelope has a caller - Lance-Corporal Clive Winton, who was once in the same repertory company as Penelope. He invites Penelope to dine with him in a neighbouring town, but since this town is out of bounds to servicemen in uniform, at Penelope's suggestion he dresses in one of Lionel's clerical suits. Miss Skillon, a parishioner, sees the couple repeating one of their old theatrical scenes as the two reminisce about their days together in theatre - and she, naturally, draws the wrong conclusion! Matters become highly complicated when Penelope's uncle, The Bishop of Lax, arrives and mistakes Clive for Lionel. Then Lionel appears, closely followed by a German P.O.W. who also dresses himself in Lionel's Garb. Rev Arthur Humphrey arrives, also in clerical garb, as he is the visiting to take the service the next day. Miss Skillon, accidentally inebriated, is locked in a cupboard, and soon there are three 'Vicars', plus the real Vicar, chasing each other in mad succession round the house.
